Over het museum
The Butler Gallery was founded in 1943 as the Kilkenny Art Gallery Society, and its name honours Susan (Peggy) and Hubert Butler. For several decades it showed art in the basement of Kilkenny Castle, before it moved to its present home.
In 2020 the gallery moved into Evans' Home on John's Quay, a nineteenth-century almshouse founded through the fortune of the Kilkenny landowner Joseph Evans to house poor domestic servants. The building stands on the site of the medieval priory of St John, and stones from the priory were reused in the almshouse in 1818. Archaeological excavations began there in 2010 as part of the redevelopment, which combined the refurbished Georgian building with a new extension and opened as a museum on 6 August 2020.
The gallery now has seven collection galleries for 20th-century Irish art, a large main gallery for changing exhibitions and a learning centre. A wing is devoted to the Tony O'Malley Collection, a broad selection of works on paper, paintings and constructions by the Irish artist (1913 to 2003), donated by his wife, the artist Jane O'Malley (1944 to 2023). Admission to the exhibitions is always free.

One wheelchair-accessible toilet is on the ground floor of the extension, and four other single-use all-gender toilets are narrower. A wheelchair can be borrowed at reception, and seating and folding gallery chairs are available. An accessible parking space is next to the Carnegie Library; parking there is very limited.
