Over het museum

Cork City Gaol is a castle-like prison on a hill at Sunday’s Well in Cork. Work on the boundary walls began in 1818 and the gaol received its first prisoner in 1824. The first execution took place there in 1828. The western wing was remodelled in 1870, and in 1878 the gaol became a prison for women only.

During the Irish Civil War of 1922–23, male and female republicans were held there. Conditions deteriorated so badly in 1923 that the prisoners were released or moved and the gaol was closed. In 1927 Raidió Éireann began broadcasting from the Governor’s House. After a four-year restoration the gaol opened to the public as a visitor attraction in 1993.

Today visitors walk through the wings with figures and sounds that bring the cells to life and meet nine prisoners and members of staff through their stories. One of them is Mary McDonnell, who had 57 convictions. Countess Markievicz described the gaol as the most comfortable prison she had been in. An audio-visual show, the governor’s office and a gift shop are on the ground floor, and the grounds include a garden with picnic tables. The gaol is privately owned and not part of the Office of Public Works.
