Over het museum
Huntington Castle was built in 1625 by Sir Laurence Esmonde as a garrison on the route between Wexford and Dublin. He had served as a soldier under Elizabeth I and later as governor of Duncannon Fort, and was made Lord Esmonde of Clonegal. After about fifty years the soldiers left, and the building gradually became a family home.
From 1680 the former garrison was known as Huntington. Later generations added a wing and ornate ceilings in 1720, and in the 1860s Alexander Durdin altered the castle again. Through marriage the owners became the Durdin Robertson family, who still live here, and Manning Durdin Robertson added the conservatory balcony and greenhouse in concrete.
In the 1970s the family converted the basement into a temple of the Egyptian goddess Isis. The temple and an old holy well in the dungeons are normally closed and can be seen only on the guided tour, which also includes the living quarters and formal rooms and takes about 40 minutes.
The grounds contain formal gardens laid out in the 1680s, restored water gardens, a lime avenue and an old yew walk. The current owners opened the tea rooms in a 17th-century barn in 2010 and welcome visitors to the estate.
