Over het museum

The Ros Tapestry grew out of an idea of Rev. Paul Mooney, who arrived at St Mary's Church in New Ross in 1998 and was inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. The project set out to tell the story of the Norman arrival in south-east Ireland in the twelfth century, including the founding of New Ross by William Marshal and Isabel de Clare.

Ann Griffin Bernstorff painted the cartoons, and Alexis Bernstorff trained the stitchers. More than 150 volunteers, working at home and in local venues, embroidered fifteen panels, each about six feet by four and a half feet, in wool on Jacobean linen twill. The first panel was finished in 2002, and the series is described as one of the largest sets of embroidered tapestries in Europe.

The panels proved too large for the church, so an exhibition centre opened on the quay in New Ross, directly opposite the Dunbrody Famine Ship. During the Covid lockdown the tapestries moved to Kilkenny Castle, and they have since returned to New Ross. Fourteen panels are finished and the last one is still being completed.
