Over het museum
Sligo Folk Park is run by a community company formed in Riverstown in 1990 to counter rural decline in the village. In the early 1990s the company bought Millview House, an old farmhouse on about six acres, as its headquarters, and began a local history research project whose documents and photographs can still be consulted by the public. The park grew out of this work, and local people donated most of the objects on display.
The park opened to visitors in 2001, with thousands of artefacts housed in Millview House and eight other buildings. A major redevelopment began in 2019, and new paths and a sensory garden were added in 2026 to improve access. The park remains a community-run social enterprise with a voluntary board.
Visitors follow a self-guided audio tour through about thirty stops. These include a recreated village street with shopfronts such as a bakery, a post office, a chemist and a pub, the 18th-century Millview House, a dairy house recalling the Riverstown creamery of 1897, a blacksmith's forge modelled on one built in 1940, a 1950s schoolroom, and a thatched cottage built in 1994 that has travelled to many festivals. The McGee Building shows rural crafts together with films from the television series Hands, and a military exhibition covers the First World War and the Irish Civil War.
