Over het museum
Teach Synge is a stone cottage of roughly 300 years in the middle of Inis Meáin, the middle island of the Aran Islands. The playwright John Millington Synge first stayed here in 1898 as a lodger of the MacDonagh family (Bríd and Páidín Mac Donnchadha). His best-known works include Riders to the Sea (1904) and The Playboy of the Western World (1907).
The house later fell into disrepair. Theresa Ní Fhatharta, a great-granddaughter of Synge's hosts, led a campaign to save it. The restoration, which was supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, brought the cottage back as close as possible to the way it looked during Synge's stay, and it opened to visitors as a small museum around 2011.
Today the rooms hold photographs, drawings and letters about Synge's time on the island. A converted stone outhouse next door serves as a small reference library with books by and about Synge, W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory.
