Over het museum
The Thomas Fitzgerald Centre in Bruff, County Limerick, is dedicated to the memory of Thomas Fitzgerald, the grandfather of US President John F. Kennedy. He left his native Bruff as a young emigrant in 1852, after the Great Famine, and settled in Boston, where he prospered. His son John “Honey” Fitzgerald served three terms as Mayor of Boston, and his grandson John Fitzgerald Kennedy became the 35th President of the United States.
The centre is in the former courthouse of Bruff, which was dedicated in memory of Thomas Fitzgerald by Caroline Kennedy on 21 June 2013. Its displays include photographs from President Kennedy’s visit to Ireland in 1963 and from the visit of Caroline Kennedy to Bruff in 2013, together with pictures of members of the Fitzgerald–Kennedy family. A hand-painted mural of the Fitzgerald family tree is described by the centre as the only one of its kind in the world. A separate local heritage display shows some of the history of Bruff and the surrounding area.
The centre is run as a visitor centre by the Bruff Heritage Group and is open on weekday mornings, with visits at other times by appointment.
