Over het museum
The Valentia Island Heritage Centre is housed in the former Knightstown National School, a building dating from 1861 that was extended in 1911 and closed as a school in 1976. The centre uses the old classrooms as three main display rooms and also serves as a tourist information point for the island.
One room, the School Room and Island Life, recalls everyday life on Valentia before the bridge to the mainland, including fishing and farming and the rescues carried out at sea. A second room covers the social, scientific and industrial heritage of the island, such as the slate quarry, the observatory and the radio station, and has a section about Maude Delap, the Edwardian marine biologist who lived on the island for many years. The third room is devoted to communications and the transatlantic telegraph cable, which was landed on Valentia in the nineteenth century.
The centre also shows pictures and maps of ancient Ogham stones, holy wells and early settlements, a display about the Devonian tetrapod footprints on the island, and archive material that visitors can consult for local research. Its visitor information describes it as more of a meeting place of past and present than a quiet museum.
