Over het museum

The Flugsafn Íslands (Icelandic Aviation Museum) began as a small collection of aviation items in Akureyri. The need arose when private aircraft lost their hangar at Akureyri Airport and valuable aircraft and gliders were at risk. The museum was founded on 1 May 1999 and opened to the public on 24 June 2000 in a leased hangar at the airport, which was later bought. In 2005 it received its current name.

A new building was erected in autumn 2006 and the museum moved there in summer 2007. Its floor area is 2,200 square metres, while the old hangar was 450. The museum is a non-profit foundation that eight aviation and air-transport organisations set up, including Flugfélag Íslands, Flugleiðir and Air Atlanta. The friends' association Örninn (The Eagle) was founded in 2013.

The museum shows the history of flying in Iceland from the first attempts and scheduled flights in 1919 to the present day, with aircraft, a rescue helicopter, models and photographs. It also covers air ambulance services and the Icelandic Coast Guard. Some of the aircraft are airworthy and take part in Flight Day in June, and visitors can board several of them, for example the Coast Guard's Fokker TF-SÝN.
