Over het museum

Gunnarshús at Skriðuklaustur in Fljótsdalur was built in 1939 by the writer Gunnar Gunnarsson when he returned to Iceland after thirty years in Denmark, determined to become a great farmer alongside his writing. The German architect Fritz Höger from Hamburg designed the house. The building was a huge project at the time, and even today the house is on the list of the largest detached houses in the country.

Gunnar and his wife Franzisca lived at Skriðuklaustur for only nine years and gave the house and estate to the Icelandic state in 1948. From 1949 to 1990 it was an agricultural research station. A guest flat for artists and scholars was set up in part of the house in 1989, the centenary of Gunnar's birth, and since 2000 Gunnarsstofnun (the Gunnar Foundation) has run it as a centre of culture and research.

On the site are also the ruins of a monastery from the 16th century, which are open all year free of charge. In Gunnarshús there are permanent exhibitions about the writer and about the medieval monastery and its archaeological excavation, as well as art exhibitions and events. Visitors can enjoy multimedia, augmented reality and virtual reality, and on the lower floor of the house is the restaurant Klausturkaffi.
