Over het museum

The sculptor Einar Jónsson designed the house, often called Hnitbjörg, together with the architect Einar Erlendsson around 1916. Einar and his wife Anna lived there for a long time from 1920. The museum was opened to the public in 1923.

The rooms of the house display Einar's sculptures, and the couple's apartment is preserved in its original form. Behind the house is a sculpture garden with 26 bronze casts of Einar's works. The garden is open to everyone all year round, day and night.

The museum stands on Skólavörðuholt next to Hallgrímskirkja and is part of the Listasafn Íslands (National Gallery of Iceland).
