Over het museum
The creamery at Baugsstaðir was founded by farmers in the area and began operating in 1905. Butter and cheese were produced there using water power, and operations continued until 1952. The main markets for the products were England and Iceland.
The creamery is the only one in the country that still has all of its original equipment. When visitors arrive, the stream is dammed so that the water wheel can power the churn and the butter-working table, just as when the creamery first opened. Nearby are the ruins of an ice house where products were stored before they went to market.
The creamery is today part of the Byggðasafn Árnesinga (Local Heritage Museum of Árnessýsla).
