Over het museum

Samúel Jónsson was born in 1884 and died in 1969. After he began receiving an old-age pension, he built himself an art museum and a church in Selárdalur and created a sculpture garden. He painted oil paintings and landscapes, framed them himself, carved wood and made models, including of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome and of an Indian temple. He had no formal art training and never travelled to other countries, relying instead on book illustrations and postcards.

When the church in Selárdalur turned one hundred, Samúel painted an altarpiece which he intended to give to it, but the parish council rejected the gift. He did not let this stop him and built a church himself to house the altarpiece. It was cast in stages, because he had only one set of formwork timber, and he fetched the gravel for the concrete from the beach.

Buildings and statues decayed over time. In 1998 the Félag um endurreisn listasafns Samúels (Association for the Restoration of Samúel’s Art Museum) was founded, and for about two decades it has worked on repairing the artworks and buildings and on rebuilding his house at Brautarholt. Visitors can see the museum in summer. The reception at Brautarholt is open in June, July and August, where coffee is available, souvenirs can be bought and guided tours are offered.
