Over het museum

The Kultur- a Geschichtshaus A Gadder preserves the historical memory of the Sanem municipality and its localities Belvaux, Ehlerange, Soleuvre and Sanem. It combines a museum, an archive and a library. Its origins go back to 1979, when the mayor at the time commissioned amateur historian Fernand Wiltgen to build up a municipal archive. The material collected was first housed in the former chaplain’s house in Belvaux, where it was opened as the municipal archive.

As the holdings grew, the collection moved to the Battinghaus, a farmhouse dating from 1850 that the municipality had acquired in 1971 after the death of the last direct descendant of the family that had built it. After a comprehensive renovation starting in 1990, the building was officially opened in 1997. The name recalls the former home of the Batting-Limpach family, the Gadderscheierhaff near Soleuvre.

The museum section comprises nine rooms: a kitchen with everyday objects from the late 19th century; the region’s industrial history, including a working blast furnace model at a scale of 1:50; a room on World War II, covering the occupation, the resistance and the fate of evacuees, forced conscripts and prisoners of war; club banners and uniforms; and topics such as the Belvaux mineral spring, discovered in 1885, the noble de Tornaco family and the town twinning with Chauffailles.
