Over het museum

Albaola grew out of Xabier Agote's efforts to revive traditional Basque boatbuilding. In 2000 the Ontziola centre, dedicated to research into and the construction of traditional boats, opened in Pasai San Pedro. In 2010 it was replaced by the Ondartxo maritime culture centre, housed in the former Ascorreta shipyard, a building owned by the Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa (Gipuzkoa Provincial Council). In 2014 it took the name Albaola Factoría Marítima Vasca and began its main project: the scientific replica of the whaling ship San Juan.

The original San Juan was built in Pasaia in 1563 and sank in 1565 in a storm at Red Bay, in Labrador (Canada), where Parks Canada located the wreck in 1978. The study of thousands of pieces made it possible to know the hull and the 16th-century techniques precisely, and Albaola built the replica from the Canadian report. The works were carried out at the factory itself until November 2025, and the ship was launched in Pasaia bay on 7 November 2025.

The factory is open to the public and stands out for its dynamism and international reach. Visitors can walk around the traditional shipyard, watch craftspeople restore wooden boats and make the ship's components, and visit the exhibition on Basque whalers.
