Over het museum

The Casa de la Apicultura, also called the Museo de la Miel (Honey Museum), is in Los Mazos, two kilometres from the village of Boal, next to the AS-12 road (Navia–Grandas). Boal, a municipality with a livestock-farming tradition, has long had many beehives, and from the 1980s of the 20th century onwards the sector became professionalised; this change led the City Council to create this space.

The centre was set up with three aims: to offer advice and training to beekeepers, to bring together a museum collection on beekeeping, and to preserve the equipment of traditional beekeeping. It has an audiovisual room, a specialised thematic library and the permanent exhibition.

The exhibition shows how the techniques used in the region have evolved over the last century, with more than a hundred old and modern pieces of fixed-comb and movable-frame beekeeping, illustrated with panels based on the work Las abejas, la miel y la cera en la sociedad tradicional asturiana by Xuaco López Álvarez. The visit invites reflection on the self-sufficiency of the Asturian farmstead, on the role of honey and wax, on the organisation of the colony and on the products of the hive. The route ends with an audiovisual on honey and wax, and is accompanied by information on the cortín, the circular stone building that traditionally protected the apiaries.
