Over het museum
The house belonged to the Pinzón family, prominent seafarers from the area who helped organise and took part in Columbus's first voyage. The three brothers, Martín Alonso, Vicente Yáñez and Francisco Martín, were born here; the first two were captains of the caravels Pinta and Niña. Washington Irving visited it in 1828.
The building stands on Calle Colón, the former royal road leading to La Rábida. It was built in Renaissance style in the 15th century and was reformed over time; its present appearance dates from the second half of the 18th century. The façade features a niche (hornacina) between two small columns and tilework resembling that used by the Polido family in Triana around 1540.
The house was occupied by several generations of Pinzóns until relatively recently. Since 1969 it has been owned by the Palos de la Frontera town council, which restored it with the collaboration of the Junta de Andalucía and turned it into a cultural space devoted to preserving and disseminating the history of the family and its role in the Discovery. Original rooms have been recreated, and historical holdings, maps, paintings and documents are on display, including a copy of Columbus's logbook. There is also an Andalusian patio with a well, a kitchen and a cellar converted into a lecture room.
