Over het museum
The Casita del Príncipe de El Pardo was built in 1784 on the commission of Charles III for his son, the then Prince of Asturias and future Charles IV. The design was by Juan de Villanueva, the same architect as the little houses of El Escorial. The idea was to have a place to rest during the day, which is why it has no bedrooms.
The building draws on Italian casinos and French ermitages. It combines granite and brick in predominantly horizontal volumes and is surrounded by neoclassical gardens, formerly hunting grounds and botanical experiment sites. Its roughly 1,800 m² are spread over four floors with small rooms.
Inside, the highlights are the stuccos imitating marble, the collections of embroidery and silks, and the paintings by Lucas Jordán, Anton Raphael Mengs and Francisco Bayeu, who painted the frescoes on the dining-room vault (1788). After nearly two decades closed and a refurbishment at the beginning of the 21st century, it reopened to the public in 2009. Since 1931 it has been listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (cultural heritage asset), and it is managed by Patrimonio Nacional.
