Over het museum
The Sierra del Sueve Interpretation Centre opened on 4 April 2007 and is owned by Colunga town council, which originated the idea, the project and the search for funding. It is housed in the former schools of Gobiendes, about one hundred metres from the pre-Romanesque church of Santiago de Gobiendes, and is conceived as the natural gateway to this coastal sierra.
The mist that greets the visitor at the entrance is the thread running through the exhibition. The centre has three rooms, a garden and a viewpoint over the Sueve, as well as a small shop, and explains the particular conditions that make the sierra special, where yew forests, beech woods almost at sea level, holly groves and tropical ferns grow.
The guided visit, adapted to the age of the audience, covers the origin and geology of the Sueve, its wild and livestock fauna and its flora, with a garden of native species, an audiovisual on the beech and yew forests, and the viewpoint, where the history of the cross on Pienzu peak is explained. The same website provides information on the Gaitero de Libardón Interpretation Centre, with reciprocal admission discounts.
