Over het museum

The Ecomuseu del Cap de Cavalleria was created in 1997 on the initiative of the non-profit association Sa Nitja, made up mainly of archaeologists and geologists, with the aim of protecting, researching and promoting the cultural and natural resources of the Cavalleria cape and the port of Sanitja. Its work covers geology, biology, the environment, ethnology and archaeology, with excavations at a Roman military camp of the 1st century BC and in the Roman town of Sanisera (1st century BC to 6th century AD). The exhibition “Descobreix el Nord!”, opened in 2005, gives an overview of the territory and has been translated into six languages.

Since 2015 the town council of Es Mercadal has held an agreement with the Autoritat Portuària de Balears (Balearic Port Authority) to use part of the lighthouse building for educational and cultural purposes. The Centre d'Interpretació del Cap de Cavalleria operates there, offering the chance to discover the history, archaeology, natural wealth and maritime heritage of Menorca's north coast. Outside, the structure of the old lighthouse dome is preserved and displayed.

The lighthouse, which entered service in 1857, stands 94 metres above sea level on the island's highest cliffs. Before it was built, more than seven hundred shipwrecks had occurred along this coast since the 14th century. The centre opens during the tourist season.

Bereikbaarheid & parkeren

Cavalleria cape is 13.2 km from Es Mercadal. From there take the road towards the northern beaches as far as the Camí de Tramuntana, turn left and, after 1 km, turn right onto the Carretera de Cavalleria to the lighthouse. From Fornells it is 15.1 km.
