Over het museum
The Ekain cave, in the Sastarrain valley, was discovered in spring 1969 by Andoni Albizuri and Rafael Rezabal, volunteers of the Antxieta Cultural Association of Azpeitia. Its paintings are Magdalenian, about 13,000 to 14,000 years old, and comprise some 70 animal figures, among which horses predominate; the Gran Panel de Caballos is its best-known ensemble. The cave was closed in 1969 to protect it and has never been open to the general public. In 2008 UNESCO included it on the World Heritage List together with 17 other caves with rock art on the Cantabrian coast.
To make Ekain’s art known without damaging the original cave, it was decided to build a replica. In 2004 the Ekain Fundazioa foundation was set up by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, the Basque Government and the Zestoa town council; it manages Ekainberri. The centre opened its doors on 11 September 2008 in the Sastarrain valley, near the real cave.
The visit is always guided: it goes through the replica of the cave, and admission includes a permanent exhibition on rock art in the Basque Country. Visitors who wish can add a prehistoric experience, with workshops on painting, making fire and hunting with spears. The centre also offers an educational programme for schoolchildren and an audio guide app with GPS that accompanies the walk through the valley.
