Over het museum
El Museo Canario was founded in 1879 on the initiative of a group of intellectuals led by Dr Gregorio Chil y Naranjo, as a stimulus to the scientific and cultural development of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and as one of the city's first tourist attractions. Its origins lie in the interest that “Canarian antiquities” aroused among the local bourgeoisie in the mid-19th century, and in the scientific links of several founders with pioneers of French anthropology, such as Verneau, Broca, Quatrefages, Hamy and Berthelot.
From the outset it was conceived as a society devoted to promoting the sciences, letters and the arts in general, with particular attention to the archipelago. In 1993 it received the Gold Medal of the City of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in 1995 it was declared of public utility, and in 1996 it won the Premio Canarias de Acervo Histórico (Canary Islands Historical Heritage Award).
The permanent exhibition is monographic and devoted to the ancient Canarians, the population of Berber origin that inhabited the island from around the turn of the era until the Castilian conquest of the 15th century. Across eleven rooms it shows the organisation of settlements, economic activities and funerary practices.
The institution also looks after an important documentary holding, with a library, a newspaper and periodicals library and an archive, and it is working to extend its facilities into adjoining buildings.
