Over het museum

The wool factory of Vielha is an example of the small textile industries that emerged from the mid-19th century on both sides of the central Pyrenees. It was built at the end of the 19th century, and its owner had learned the trade in Miramont-de-Comminges, in France, where his wife's family came from. The energy came from the Nere river, which an external millrace (acequia) carried to a wooden wheel attached to a long shaft with the machinery's gears.

Valley residents brought clean, dry wool to the factory, where it was weighed and the number of skeins and the thickness of the yarn were agreed. On the ground floor, three machines carried out the first stage: the diablo (or tigre) opener separated the fleeces, the opening card turned them into a sliver, and the finishing card prepared the wool for spinning, which was completed in the loft. The factory ran on river power until the floods of 1963 and afterwards on electricity, until production declined and it closed in the seventies, after three generations devoted to wool.

In 1999 the Conselh Generau d’Aran decided to buy and restore the building to turn it into a living testimony of the valley's contemporary history. Today it is part of the Musèus dera Val d’Aran, the network of six museum spaces directly managed by the Conselh.
