Over het museum

The museum descends from the Museum of Antiquities of the Colegio de Santo Domingo, founded in 1902 by the Jesuit Julio Furgús. After the excavation of the Los Saladares site in the late sixties and early seventies, Orihuela town council promoted the creation of a comarcal archaeological museum, authorised by the Ministry of Education and Science by an order of 16 February 1970.

It had several temporary premises: the Palacio de Teodomiro, the Hospital Municipal and the former coach houses of the Palacio de Rubalcava. The Conselleria de Cultura officially recognised it as a museum in 1993, and since Holy Week 1997 it has occupied the church and the Sala de Hombres of the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, a building rebuilt in the mid-18th century.

The collection brings together material from the Palaeolithic to the 18th and early 19th centuries, mostly from Orihuela and its comarca. Among the best-known pieces are the Idol of Orihuela, two Iberian sculptures from the Cerro de los Santos, the Hebrew inscribed stone of Orihuela and the processional float known as the Cruz de los Labradores, or “Diablesa”, a work by Nicolás de Bussy from 1694-1695, which is displayed in the presbytery. The Sala de Hombres is used for temporary exhibitions.
