Over het museum

The Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante opened in 1932 on the ground floor of the Palacio de la Diputación in the city centre. In 2000 it moved to its present building, the former San Juan de Dios provincial hospital on Plaza del Doctor Gómez Ulla, which was refurbished to offer a much larger exhibition area. Since then it has been known as MARQ and depends on the Alicante Provincial Council through the Fundación C. V. MARQ.

In 2004 the European Museum Forum awarded it the European Museum of the Year prize, a recognition that only a few Spanish museums have received. The museum was conceived as an alternative to the traditional display of classified finds, with stage sets, audiovisuals and interactive spaces.

The route through the permanent galleries follows chronological order: Prehistory, Iberian culture, Roman culture, the Middle Ages, and the Early Modern and Contemporary periods. Three thematic galleries (Field Archaeology, Urban Archaeology and Underwater Archaeology) and an interactive corridor on archaeosciences explain how archaeologists work.

The Fundación C. V. MARQ also manages visitable archaeological sites in the province, such as the Tossal de Manises (the Roman city of Lucentum), the Illeta dels Banyets, the Pla de Petracos and the Cova de l’Or, as well as the monument of the Torre de Almudaina.
