Over het museum

The museum was officially created in 1983, when the municipal archaeological collection gained museum status. Its origins go back to the antiquities cabinet of the Escuelas Pías school, formed around 1870, and to 1958, when the municipal collection was first displayed in the Casa Municipal de Cultura. It is part of the Red de Museos de la Región de Murcia (Murcia Museum Network) and is run directly by the Culture Department of Yecla town council.

The museum occupies part of the former Palacio de los Ortega, an 18th-century building that the town council bought in 1983 to house the Casa Municipal de Cultura. After a rehabilitation in 2012 it reopened under the name Museo Arqueológico Cayetano de Mergelina.

The permanent exhibition is spread over twelve rooms and four areas, each linked to a site: prehistory (Monte Arabí), Iberian culture (Cerro de los Santos), Romanisation (Los Torrejones) and the Middle Ages (Cerro del Castillo). From the Cerro de los Santos, an Iberian sanctuary that yielded some 400 sculptures, the museum keeps 51 pieces.

• Cultura ibérica: Cerro de los Santos – Rooms 5 to 8 with sculptures and objects from the Iberian sanctuary of Cerro de los Santos.
• Romanización y Edad Media – Rooms 9 to 12 on the Roman villa of Los Torrejones and the Middle Ages on Cerro del Castillo.

Gratis toegang: Free admission on 18 May (International Museum Day) and during the Open Doors Days of the September fair.

The standard rate of €2.50 applies to the permanent exhibition. The ReGreco exhibition of replicas (€1.25) is closed for works. There are combined tickets with ReGreco and with Cantos de Visera.
