Over het museum
The museum occupies one of the most outstanding houses in the old town of Xàbia, the casa-palacio of Antoni Banyuls. Its first owner and builder, who died in 1662, was steward (mayordomo) to King Philip III, which is where the name casa-palacio comes from. The building was erected in the first half of the 17th century and stands out for its rough-stone façade, with the porxens (covered galleries) of the upper floor.
The three floors of the interior were greatly transformed in the second half of the 19th century, following the fashion of a period of economic boom. Of the original state, only the clay-tile floor with green and white mocadorets in room VI survives.
The permanent exhibition brings together objects related to the history of Xàbia, from the first Neolithic settlements to the modern era, spread over 13 rooms. The route covers prehistory, the Iberian and Roman worlds and the medieval period, and continues with an underwater archaeology room with pieces recovered from the coast of Xàbia. Other rooms show a selection of the work bequeathed by the painter J. B. Segarra Llamas and a space on traditional culture, with clothing, machinery and farm tools.
