Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1868 as the Museo Arqueológico Provincial, from pieces that the disentailments of Church property had brought together since 1844 in the Museo de Bellas Artes. For decades it shared a home with that museum and moved through several buildings until, in 1959, it was installed in the Palacio de los Páez de Castillejo, a large Renaissance house in the historic centre of Córdoba. In 1962 the building and the collections were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
Over time the palace became too small for the needs of a modern museum. An international competition held in 1998 chose the design by the IDOM team for an extension building, inaugurated on 31 January 2011. It houses exhibition rooms, a library, an archive, a restoration laboratory and the reception areas. In its basement a part of the Roman theatre of Colonia Patricia Corduba, found on the site, has been preserved, restored and opened to the public, together with remains of late Roman workshops and Andalusi houses.
The exhibition “Córdoba, encuentro de culturas” presents the most significant pieces of the holdings, from prehistory to the Late Middle Ages, and will remain open until the second phase, which will renew the Renaissance palace and its permanent exhibition, is carried out. The collection exceeds 33,500 inventoried pieces and continues to grow thanks to excavations in the city and the province.
