Over het museum
The Museo Catedralicio de Zamora opened in 1926 to bring together and display to the public works from the cathedral itself and from other parishes in the diocese. It is entered from the cathedral cloister. In 1992 it was extended with four rooms on the lower floor, and in 2001 it was remodelled for the exhibition “Remembranza” of the Fundación Las Edades del Hombre. Since June 2005 visits to the museum and the cathedral have been combined, and in 2010 the contents were reorganised by theme.
The best-known ensemble is the collection of Flemish tapestries from the 15th and 16th centuries. It includes the Tarquin Priscus tapestry (around 1475), the Trojan War tapestries from Tournai workshops, the vineyard tapestries woven in Brussels around 1500 and the Hannibal tapestries by François Geubels (around 1570). The processional monstrance also stands out. It was completed by Pedro de Ávila in 1515 and given a base by Antonio Rodríguez in 1598.
Among the paintings are two panels from the workshop of Fernando Gallego (around 1495), which formed part of the old high altar of the cathedral. That altar was dismantled in 1715 and replaced by a Baroque one by Joaquín Benito Churriguera. In 2016 the 13th-century Chapel of St James (Capilla de Santiago) was opened, with stone sculptures, including a Virgin and Child with the young St John in Carrara marble, attributed to Bartolomé Ordóñez. In 2017 a room was created for artists from Zamora of the 20th and 21st centuries.
