Over het museum
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Elche (MACE) arose from the initiative of a group of artists, the Grup d’Elx (1966-1975), linked to the avant-garde movements of the post-war period, and opened in 1980. The group brought together works by colleagues and friends with the aim of bringing new art closer to the public.
The museum occupies the former town hall building of the Raval de Sant Joan, built in 1655 as a single-storey civil building with an arcaded façade. It stopped being the town hall in 1827, became a school in 1857, and in 1974 the project to reform it as a municipal museum was approved. In 1978 the entire interior was transformed and two floors were added.
The collection is closely linked to Spanish avant-garde art from the sixties to the present day. It is spread over four rooms and centres on abstract art, especially Informalism, and on figurative or realist art. The artists represented include Tàpies, Equipo Crónica, Juan Genovés, Manolo Millares, Lucio Muñoz and Yturralde.
