Over het museum
The museum's origins go back to 1969, when the Diputación Provincial de Asturias and the Oviedo City Council created the Centro Provincial de Bellas Artes, later the Centro Regional de Bellas Artes. The gallery opened to the public on 19 May 1980 with seven rooms and 78 works.
The first premises was the Palacio de Velarde, built between 1765 and 1770, which was adapted between 1973 and 1976. The Casa de Oviedo-Portal, dating from 1660, was incorporated into the museum in 1986. Both buildings were refurbished between 1993 and 1996, and on 31 March 2015 the new extension, designed by Francisco Mangado, was inaugurated.
The collection comes from the former Diputación Provincial and the Academia Provincial de Bellas Artes de San Salvador, and has grown through acquisitions, donations, bequests and deposits, above all the Pedro Masaveu Peterson collection. It now exceeds 15,000 pieces, including painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, photography and decorative arts, from the 14th to the 21st century.
