Over het museum

The Paraninfo building, designed by the architect Ricardo Magdalena, opened in 1893 and is the oldest historic building of the University of Zaragoza. Its basement houses the museum's permanent exhibition, covering about 950 square metres across three zones.

The founding collections come from the University's palaeontology collection and from the collection of the Jesuit naturalist Longinos Navás, which the Society of Jesus deposited at the University in 1988. The University's Governing Council created the museum on 24 June 2013, and the Government of Aragon authorised its creation in July 2014, which brought it into the Aragonese Museum System.

The visit traces the history of life from the Precambrian to the Quaternary, the naturalist's study with stuffed animals, skeletons, shells and insects, and a display of minerals from the three Aragonese provinces, linked by a corridor devoted to evolution. The palaeontological collection stores and the fossil preparation laboratory are located in the Faculty of Sciences.
