Over het museum

The museum originated in the Natural History Cabinet founded in 1850 by Antonio Machado y Núñez, professor of Mineralogy and Zoology and grandfather of the poets Antonio and Manuel Machado. For more than a hundred years the collections were housed in the Faculty of Sciences, located in the former Casa Profesa of the Jesuits on calle Laraña, until they were moved in 1957 to the former Fábrica de Tabacos.

Over time the collections kept growing and now hold more than 5,000 specimens of mineralogy, petrology and palaeontology, as well as thin sections, scientific instruments, books and historical inventories from the 19th and 20th centuries.

From 2008, driven by the University's General Research Services and the Friends of the Museum association, an exhibition for the public was prepared, which opened in April 2011 on the first floor of the CITIUS building (Centro de Investigación, Tecnología e Innovación de la Universidad de Sevilla), on the Reina Mercedes campus. The second floor also houses an exhibition on the Riotinto mining basin. Another part of the collections is presented at the Casa de la Ciencia of the CSIC under the title “Geosevilla. Explora 540 millones de años”.
