Over het museum
The museum is installed in what was the city's first water reservoir. It was built by Ildefons Cerdà and Leodegario Marchessaux to a design by Calixto Santa Cruz, as part of the city's water supply project. Water was drawn from the Turia river at Manises and distributed to eight public fountains; the service opened in 1850. The reservoir, around 2,600 m², was sunk into the ground and covered by eleven brick vaults resting on 250 pilasters. Over time it went out of use and was nearly forgotten until it was rediscovered in the mid-1990s.
The building was restored between 1998 and 2001, with great respect for the original structure. The museum was established by municipal agreement in January 2001, with the task of studying and sharing the city's history, and opened on 7 May 2003.
The permanent exhibition brings together items from the foundation of the city to the present day, arranged in eight periods, from Valentia Edetanorum (138 BC–711) to La Valencia vivida (1975–2003). The museum also has a media library, a multipurpose room and rooms for temporary exhibitions, and offers guided tours of the permanent exhibition.
