Over het museum

The history of the museum begins in 1846, when a Museum of Paintings, with holdings from the disentailments (desamortizaciones), opened to the public. In 1914 the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes was created and installed in the palace of the Diputación. As the space was limited, a plot was bought on the Paseo de la Estación, where in 1920 the design by Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta was approved: a palace in a classical style with a square plan and towers at the corners, in which two Renaissance doorways, those of the Pósito and of the church of San Miguel, were installed.

Construction stalled in the late 1920s and, after the Civil War, the army occupied the building. Between 1938 and 1969 the collections were dispersed across different venues, in what was called the “Museo Disperso” (Scattered Museum). The archaeology section was founded in 1963, and the Museo Arqueológico Provincial was later established. Both were merged by decree in 1969 to form the present Museo Provincial de Jaén, which opened in its permanent home in 1971 after adaptation by the architect Luis Berges Roldán.

Today the museum displays 1,691 pieces and keeps more than 150,000 in its storerooms. Iberian culture is the backbone of the archaeology section, while the fine arts section brings together 19th- and 20th-century painting, works by artists from Jaén and one of the most important collections of contemporary prints in Andalusia.
