Over het museum
The Museu de la Valltorta was founded in 1994 to conserve, study and disseminate the rock art of the Valencian Community. It is owned by the Generalitat Valenciana and functions as a visitor reception centre and information point on the surroundings of La Valltorta. The building, designed by the architects Miguel del Rey Aynat and Iñigo Magro de Orbe, stands about 500 metres from the Valltorta ravine.
The first rock paintings in the ravine were discovered in 1917 by Albert Rueda. In 1998 the rock art of the Mediterranean arc of the Iberian Peninsula was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2016 the Parque Cultural Valltorta-Gassulla was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Interest Asset).
The museum presents Valencian rock art in four permanent exhibition rooms and one room for temporary exhibitions. It is also a research centre, with a laboratory, archaeological workshops, a library and a graphic archive on the rock art of the Iberian Mediterranean basin. Guided visits to the shelters with paintings set out from the museum; they are free and require prior booking.
