Over het museum
The Museo de los Bolos de Asturias opened its doors in April 2003 in Panes, the capital of the municipality of Peñamellera Baja. Its aim is to present bolos as a cultural, social and sporting tradition and as a symbol of Asturian identity.
The building has two floors and houses more than a thousand pieces. The upper floor explains the fourteen variants played in Asturias, grouped into knock-down games (derribo) and aventao games, with objects, photographs and illustrations of the technique. The ground floor shows how the pins and balls are made and how the playing area is prepared.
The collections also include photographs, posters, paintings, uniforms, trophies and models of stone and wooden alleys, as well as a video about the game and a documentation centre with books, magazines and documents. Quotations from writers such as Jovellanos, Casona and Celso Amieva are displayed throughout the rooms. The museum also presents the various theories about the origin of the game, including the influence of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago from the 10th century.
