Over het museum
The Museo Plasentia de Butrón grew out of the interest of people linked to the sea in Plentzia in gathering objects and stories about the town's history, a task that began to take shape in 1994. The picture gallery opened in 1998 and, in January 1999, the Fundación Plasentia de Butrón inaugurated the museum with the aim of recovering and displaying various elements of the history of Plentzia and its region, Uribe Kosta.
It is located in the historic centre of Plentzia, in the former town hall on Goienkale street. The permanent exhibition occupies an entrance area and two floors, and its highlights are the ship models showing the evolution of navigation in the Cantabrian Sea, together with nautical instruments.
The collection now exceeds 1,450 pieces, including navigation instruments, logbooks, Roman coins, sculptures and personal letters. The museum also has a digital catalogue and the Plentzia municipal historical archive, which can be visited by appointment, and it offers educational programmes for schools.
