Over het museum
The museum is devoted to one of the most emblematic Talayotic sites in the Balearic Islands, Son Fornés, in the Pla de Mallorca. Excavations began in 1975 under the direction of Vicenç Lull, and since then they have been continued by the research team of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The site occupies a little over ten hectares of public land, protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, and its excavated area of more than 2,000 m² is set up for public visits, which remain free and open to all.
The museum is currently housed in the Molí des Fraret, in the village of Montuïri. In future the permanent home is planned to be set up on the former Mallorcan estate of the property, now almost in ruins, together with the facilities needed for the centre's intense research, development and innovation activity.
Its permanent exhibition brings together the most significant finds from the excavations and helps visitors understand how island communities changed during the first millennium BC. It consists of five exhibition modules following a chronological route from the Talayotic room to Late Antiquity. The museum also oversees field and laboratory research, the conservation and restoration of the site, and offers recreational, educational and training activities.
