Over het museum
The museum traces its origins to the former Museo Arqueológico Territorial de las Tierras del Ebro, founded in 1956 to conserve the finds that the archaeologist Francesc Esteve Gálvez and the Grup de Recerques Arqueològiques d'Amposta collected in the 1950s and 1960s. It was first housed in premises of the Amposta town hall and in 1984 moved to the remodelled building of the Miquel Granell public schools, where the Museu del Montsià opened, a regional multidisciplinary museum focused on natural, archaeological and ethnological heritage.
In 2011 the Museu de les Terres de l'Ebre opened following a comprehensive refurbishment of the Museu Comarcal del Montsià and a renewal of its remit and services. After Law 27/2013 on the rationalisation and sustainability of local government, the consortium's statutes were revised to attach it to Amposta town council.
Its collections in archaeology, ethnology and natural sciences comprise more than 35,000 objects and form the most important holdings in the Terres de l'Ebre. Besides its exhibition rooms, the museum offers a media library, a multimedia space, educational and tourist services and a service supporting other museums, and it leads the “Ebre, natura & cultura” network of museums, interpretation centres, archaeological sites and monuments in the region.
