Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1929 as the Archivo Museo Folclórico de Ripoll and was the first in Catalonia devoted to ethnography. Its first home was in the attics of the former church of Sant Pere. The present venue, in the former Budallés house, opened in March 2011 after about ten years of adapting the building.
The museum describes itself as a centre for documentation, study, dissemination and conservation of tangible and intangible ethnological heritage, above all of the Ripollès and the eastern Pyrenees. Its notable holdings include those on shepherds and peasants, crafts, popular religiosity, the Catalan forge and wrought iron, and the portable firearms made in Ripoll.
The permanent exhibition occupies three floors and is organised into twelve areas. The route begins with an audiovisual on the history of the museum, continues with prehistory and a stretch of city wall found during the works, recalls the old museum with its 1932 shepherds' diorama, and then presents farm work, life at home, games, crafts, iron and the firearms of Ripoll. The museum also organises guided visits to the Scriptorium and to the Ripoll air-raid shelter.
