Over het museum

The Museu Frederic Marès holds the collections assembled by the sculptor Frederic Marès (1893–1991), who donated them to the city of Barcelona in 1946. A first selection had already been shown to the public in 1944, and the museum was officially inaugurated in 1948; it had opened its first room in 1946 in a house on calle dels Comtes.

The museum occupies part of the former Palau Reial Major, residence of the counts of Barcelona and of the kings of the Crown of Aragon in the Middle Ages, next to the cathedral. Several adjoining buildings were incorporated and some rooms were restored in a medieval style. Extensions continued until 1970, when the building reached its present size. Today it is entered through the courtyard, the former palace garden, from the plaza de Sant Iu.

From 1997 a museographic renovation project was drawn up, carried out in three phases: the ground floor and a temporary exhibition room in 1999, the stone sculpture room in the basement in 2001, and the first floor in 2011.

The sculpture collection ranges from antiquity to the 19th century, with a predominance of religious polychrome carving. The Gabinet del col·leccionista (Collector's Cabinet), formerly known as the Museo Sentimental, groups thousands of everyday and curious objects, mostly from the 19th century, across 17 rooms.
