Over het museum
The Pueblo Español de Palma began to be built in 1965 and opened on 9 March 1967. The project was presented in 1963 and promoted by the company Conextur with the aim of attracting and retaining international tourists. Its design is by the architect Fernando Chueca Goitia, who conceived a village bringing together the characteristic features of Spanish towns.
The site covers some 6,365 square metres and reproduces, to scale, buildings, streets and squares from different Spanish cities, built with materials from their regions of origin. It has 18 building blocks, 15 streets and 12 squares, with a total of 72 examples of Spanish architecture. It is the third-largest complex of this type, after the Pueblo Español in Barcelona and the one in Belgium, and the only one built from the outset as a tourist attraction.
Today the site combines walks through its narrow streets with art galleries, craft shops, a restaurant and a programme of exhibitions and cultural events. It is also rented for weddings and corporate events. The institution itself presents a museum with original works by artists such as Miró, Calder and Saura.
