Over het museum
A prehistoric village has been built in Všestary since 1997, on the initiative of staff of the Centre of Experimental Archaeology. The project is led by doc. Radomír Tichý of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Hradec Králové. Hundreds of experiments carried out with prehistoric methods took place in Všestary, and on their basis specialist journals on the reconstruction and experiment in archaeology began to be published. From 2000 the centre was open to school excursions, and to the public until 2010 only in the summer period and on spring and autumn weekends.
The present site was built in 2009 to 2012 as part of the project Archeopark pravěku ve Všestarech (Archaeological Park of Prehistory in Všestary), co-financed by the European Union. The investor was the Hradec Králové Region, with the University of Hradec Králové, the East Bohemian Museum and the municipality of Všestary as partners. The prehistoric village was extended by a new building for the main exhibition, a building for the outdoor exhibition and reconstructions of prehistoric buildings; an access road with a car park was also added to the site.
The main building has three floors. On the ground floor is the exhibition Podzemí (Underground), with a cave with paintings, a flint mine and a megalithic tomb. On the first floor is Život v pravěku (Life in Prehistory), with a large model of the prehistoric landscape, and on the upper floors there is a bird’s-eye view of the landscape and an overview of the prehistory of Bohemia and Moravia. The new building contains two audiovisual exhibitions: one on the experimental voyages of the Monoxylon and the other called Život kamenné sekery (Life of the Stone Axe).
Outside, the open-air museum has reconstructions of buildings from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages. The project also includes the twelve-kilometre Archeocyklotrasa (Archaeological Cycle Route) from Hradec Králové to Všestary, with information boards at the archaeological sites.
