Over het museum
The building of today’s Galerie Kaple was built in 1611 by Jetřich of Žerotín as a Renaissance riding hall. At that time only three similar buildings stood in Moravia, the others being in Velké Losiny and Břeclav. After the defeat of the Estates’ Uprising the building was confiscated and from 1628 served as a storehouse; during the Napoleonic Wars the army set up a field hospital in it.
Later, in the neighbouring Žerotín château, a women’s prison operated, the only one of its kind in Moravia, and the former field hospital was converted between 1855 and 1908 into a prison chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. After the prison was closed, the building served as a storehouse and fell into disrepair; for some time it was even without a roof, and demolition was considered.
A fundamental change came with the reconstruction completed in 2008, which received the Building of the Year award of the Zlín Region. Since 2009 the former chapel has been a multifunctional cultural venue and a gallery of contemporary art, with a monumental main hall of 1,710 m³ and two basement levels. The gallery focuses on solo and monographic exhibitions by prominent personalities of the Czech and international scene and divides its programme into four exhibition blocks a year.
