Over het museum
The tradition of Nová síň is linked to the art association Jednota umělců výtvarných, whose roots go back to 1898. Among its founders were artists of the so-called Národní divadlo generation, such as Josef Václav Myslbek, Vojtěch Hynais, Václav Brožík and Mikoláš Aleš.
At the beginning of the 1930s the association commissioned a design for the partial rebuilding of the economic wing of the St Ursula convent and for a new building on the site of the former service entrance. It was designed by the architect Jaroslav Rössler, a pupil of Jan Kotěra. The association house with two exhibition halls, called Nová síň, was opened in 1934. Besides a smaller gallery on the upper floor and a larger hall on the ground floor, it also included rooms for association and artistic activities.
Today only the ground-floor exhibition hall, known as Galerie Nová síň, is open to the public. The building is part of the convent complex and belongs to the Czech Province of the Roman Union of the Order of St Ursula. From 2005 to 2014 the Jednota umělců výtvarných organised exhibitions here; since May 2014 the gallery has been run by a private operator. The gallery is valued for its evenly diffused daylight and restrained functionalist space; the hall measures 15.7 × 8.5 m.
