Over het museum

The Upper Synagogue, also known as the Old Synagogue, the Dome Synagogue (Dómská) or Altschul, stands on Husova Street, which once formed the main axis of Mikulov’s Jewish quarter. It was built in 1550 on sloping ground just below Castle Hill and received its present Baroque form in 1719–1723, after a fire had destroyed the Jewish town. Four domes rest on a pillar with four columns in the middle of the hall, which is why the synagogue is the only one of the so-called Polish, that is eastern, type in the Czech lands.

Services were held here until 1938, when the Jews of Mikulov fled the Nazi threat. During the war the building served as a warehouse, and it was used in a similar way after the war, so it fell into disrepair. The Regional Museum in Mikulov saved it from demolition and had it restored in 1977–1989. Most of the religious features disappeared at that time. The synagogue served as an exhibition hall and concert hall, and in 2003 an exhibition on Mikulov and the Moravian Jews was set up in it.

In 2010–2014 a complete reconstruction took place as part of the Federation of Jewish Communities project “10 hvězd”. It returned the building to its appearance before the Second World War: a new winter prayer room was created, the staircase to the women’s gallery was restored, the stucco decoration with Hebrew inscriptions was conserved, and the Torah ark (aron ha-kodeš) was renewed based on photographs. Today the synagogue is an exhibition space and a venue for cultural and educational events.
