Over het museum
By the 16th century Kokořín Castle no longer met the growing demands for living, and it was in poor condition. After the Thirty Years' War Emperor Ferdinand classed it among the “cursed” castles that were not allowed to be repaired, and the castle became merely a decaying part of the estate. According to legend, robber knights led by Petrovský z Petrovic, the terror of the whole area, lived in it.
In the 19th century the castle was already a ruin, admired by Romantic artists such as Karel Hynek Mácha, Josef Navrátil and Antonín Mánes. In 1895 the castle returned to public attention thanks to the Klub českých turistů (Club of Czech Tourists), which presented its model at the Ethnographic Exhibition in Prague and partly opened it to the public.
In 1896 the estate was bought by Václav Špaček ze Starburgu, and in 1911 he began an extensive reconstruction with the help of leading historians. His son Jan completed it in 1918; it was the first comprehensively conceived rescue of a medieval ruin in Bohemia. After 1950 the castle passed to the state, and in 2006 it returned to the heirs of the Špaček family, who continue to open it to the public.
