Over het museum
Pernštejn Castle was founded by the lords of Medlov, later known as the Pernštejns, between 1270 and 1285. The oldest core occupies the summit of a long rocky crag. The original simple layout is lost in a tangle of later rebuildings, but the late Gothic and early Renaissance form of the castle has not been disturbed by later alterations and is a unique example of a medieval fortress transformed into a more luxurious Renaissance residence.
In the castle palace a visitor can follow the development of the residence from a simple castle through a late Gothic fortress and a Renaissance palace to a Baroque, Rococo and Classicist residence and the Romanticism of the 19th century. The last noble family at the castle were the Counts Mittrowský of Nemyšl, to whom a separate tour is devoted.
Today the castle is administered by the National Heritage Institute. Visitors can see four castle courtyards, the castle library and the lookout tower. In recent years the extensive estate garden on the south-west slope below the castle has also been restored: a unique set of garden styles in mountain terrain, from the formal French garden to the Anglo-Chinese section and wooded areas.
