Over het museum
Točník Castle was built by King Wenceslas IV after 1395 on a rocky ridge above the later town of Točník. An older castle, Žebrák, had stood nearby and burned at that time, and the new castle was to serve as a residential royal seat. The building is one of the last types of Czech castles in which defence gave way to comfort; it is often called a “castle-palace” (hradozámek).
The core of the castle is the Royal Palace, separated from the rest of the complex by a moat, and beside it a hall building with a large hall. Its dimensions exceeded the representative rooms of other castles of the time. After Jan Hus's death Wenceslas IV stayed at the castle less and less, and after his death the castle passed to further owners. In the Hussite wars the castle withstood a siege; later it changed owners several times and gradually decayed.
The castle was not conquered from outside but destroyed from within by local people who had taken refuge in it from the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. From the 18th century the ruins have attracted visitors as a destination for romantic walks. Today the castle is managed by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ), and visitors walk through it independently with printed texts and a map.
